Theodore Miaman (1927- )

Theodore was born in Los Angeles, California on July 11, 1927. Maiman was the inventor of the first operable laser in 1960 and went on to gain world - wide recognition for it. He is one of the most well known physicists for work on lasers, microwaves and optical spectroscopy.

Maiman attended a university in Colorado and received a B.S. in engineering physics in 1949. He then went on to do graduate work at Stanford University, where he received an M.S in electrical engineering in 1951 and a Ph.D. in physics in 1955. In 1960, he developed, demonstrated and patented a laser using a pink ruby medium and gained world - wide recognition. In 1962, Maiman founded his own company, " The Korad Corporation" devoted to the research, development and manufacture of lasers. In 1968, he formed associates after seeling his company to Union Corbide Corporation. In 1976, he joined TRW and has been responsible for directing the management of technology and the establishment of new high - technology ventures. Theodore Maiman is also the director of control laser corporation and a member of the advisory board of industrial research magazine.

The amplified light of the laser that Maiman invented in 1960 has many uses in industry, surgery, military range finders, as well as bar code scanners and compact disc players. After Maiman received his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1955, Maiman accepted a position with the Hughes research laboratories in Miami. He became interested in a device developed and built by Charles H. Towne 's and caulleagues and known as a Maser (acronym for Microwave Amplification by Stimulated Emission of Radiation).

Theodore made design innovations that greatly increased the practicability of solid - state maser. After that he developed an optical maser or laser, which is based on the maser principal but produces visible light rather than microwaves. This big invention of Maiman's would again be used by doctors in surgery and by the military to guide aircraft and "Smart Bombs" to their targets. These lasers are being used in computer printers and grocery checkout scanners. Today, bursts of laser light are used to send massive amounts of data through fiber - optic telephone lines and lasers are used and retrieved information on compact discs.

In conclusion, Theodore Maiman made a tremendous contribution to society by inventing the laser. These lasers do a lot useful things and play a big part in our society. Without these lasers we wouldn't be able to listen to CD Players, grocery stores would be using calculators to total prices up, and so on.
